Military leaders’ images of the second half of the XIXth century in the works of A. Forbes: Some aspects of the British military journalism formation

The article is devoted to one of the aspects of interaction between the press and society. The author examines the personified approach used bythe British war correspondent A. Forbesto display thetheme of war –the creation of a psychophysical and professional portrait ofmilitary leaders of the second half of the 19th century. It is shown that A. Forbes singles out F. Karl and M. Skobelev as examples of combining special service qualities with romantic features of a heroic image. It is concluded that A.

Based on the analysis of diplomatic correspondence of British ambassador in Russia at the court of Empress Anna Ioannovna highlights the process of preparation for the conclusion of the Russian-British commercial treaty in 1734. In foreign and Russian historiography, the treaty was actively discussed, but the plot related to its preparatory stage was poorly covered, or not touched at all.

N. V. Orloff and the Beginning of Teaching of the Russian Language at King’s College London

The article restores the biography of N. V. Orloff (1844–1915), a psalmist of the Church in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God at the Russian Embassy in London, which, in addition to his official duties and translation activities, was involved in the process of establishing Russian studies in Great Britain in the late XIXth – early XXth centuries.

The paper is aimed at identifying the main causes of the dominance of violence in the interaction of Arabs and Jews in the Middle East in the first half of the 20th century. At that time Zionism finally took shape as political force, and the active migration of Jews to the territory
of Palestine began to provoke the Arabs. The author researches the conflict through the prism of the international presence in the region and concludes that the UK has not coped with the stabilization of the situation in the mandated territory.

The Land Forces of Great Britain in the Middle of the 1930s: Problems of Modernization

Traditional views on the role of the army and difficult situation in the country in the 1920s and early 1930s largely contributed to stagnation of the British army. As a result, land forces did not meet the requirements of modern warfare. In response to changes in the European context, the Army General Staff developed a plan for “limited modernization,” but military issues remained in the shadow of Air Force and Navy.

The Great reform Act (election law) of 1832 was one of the most significant internal political events in the United Kingdom of the 19th century. It initiated the group of serious transformations of the parliamentary system of the State. The article is based on the analysis of documentary sources (press and parliamentary debate). It shows the influence of British public opinion and the press on the process of the adoption of the parliamentary reform in 1830–1832. The struggle for reform showed the extreme polarization of political forces in the UK.
