Heads of local authorities in central Russia from the regional reform of Peter I to the administrative transformations of Catherine II: “Local history” opus

. The review is devoted to the first monographic study about the leaders of the Vladimir province – an administrative unit in central Russia,formed duringthe Petrine reforms and abolished under Catherine II. It was found that the book by L. A. Mogilnaya meets the criteria inherent in modern researching with the “local history” methodology. The book is also a serious contribution to the study of the history of local government and its leaders, traditional for Russian science, and an example for carrying out similar works in other regions.

It is noted that the authors of the monograph highly professionally investigated the contribution of P. G. Lyubomirova in domestic historiography. The review analyzes the main ideas and scientific approaches of the authors of the biography.

M. B. Barclay de Tolly in the Soviet Fiction of the First Half of the 20th Century

In this article an attempt to review the Soviet fiction of the first half of the 20th century to reveal how the role of the commander M. B. Barclay de Tolly is estimated there at the epoch of the Twelfth year is made. As a result of the analysis of literary works of that time it is possible to state that views of the Soviet writers synchronously reflect all the aspects of the Soviet historiography: from semirecognition of qualities of a military leader Barclay and his merits in rescuing army (and objectively the country) to groundless defamation.

The Northern Realm of Canute the Great in Historiography

The article analyzes the place of king Canute the Great’s (1016 – 1035 state in foreign and national historiography. Most of the works published today in different languages are considered. Until now, such work has not been published in Russian.

The article gives the review of the manuscript heritage by the bishop of the Saratov and Tsaritsin eparchy Jacob (Vecherkov) which are kept in some Russian central and regional archives. The criticism of his scientific works and letters is undertaken. The future of investigations of his heritage, church, social and scientific activities is demonstrated. 

The Economic Aspects of the History of Medieval and Early Modern Towns in Modern Ukrainian Historiography

The article analyzes the study of the economic aspects of medieval and early modern urban history by Ukrainian historians, primarily on the example of the study of urban guilds. The author draws attention to new approaches in the study of the issue and to the question of how the new understanding of culture and anthropological turn in historiography affect the study of the economy of towns. The article also indicates possible new perspectives for the study of the problem

1812 in the works of the Saratov historians

The article includes a historiografic review of works of the Saratov researchers about the war of 1812. Mainly it says about the books published in 1912–2012. Analysing the works by N. F. Hovansky, V. V. Pugachev, N. A.Troitsky, V. P. Totfalushin, V. S. Parsamov, Yu. L. Yepanchin, I. N. Pleshakov etc. the author has come to the conclusion that the works of the Saratov historians of 1812 war have common features: attentive attitude to the sources, wide range of issues regarded, tendency to demythologization of the war history, denial of pseudopatriotic stereotypes.

Highlight the achievements of modern Russian authors to identify and explore key areas, which were implemented in the social ministry of the church during this period, the ways of further research topics.
